Biography


Kang the Conqueror was born Nathaniel Richards in the 30th century of Earth-6311, in which humanity’s scientific progress was never held back by the Dark Ages. In that universe, however, war broke out between Earth and Luna, the lunar colony it had established. This war lead to global devastation, which was only remedied by the timely arrival of one Nathaniel Richards of Earth-616, father of Reed Richards.

The Nathaniel Richards of Earth-6311, said to be a descendant of either his 616 counterpart or of Doctor Doom, was at some point visited by his future self, Kang. Wishing to avoid that destiny, Nathaniel became the superhero Iron Lad, although this was ultimately short-lived.

As an adult, somehow he found himself in possession of a time machine. Bored with the peace his 616 counterpart had given to his world, Nathaniel traveled through time and space to arrive in ancient Egypt (Earth-616), where he established himself as the Pharaoh Rama-Tut.

Eventually ousted from his pharaonic position by the Fantastic Four, Rama-Tut attempted to return to his native 30th century. But a time-storm caused him to overshoot, and he ended up in the war-torn 40th century. There he found a bloody future indeed, where fools battled with then-ancient technology of which they had limited knowledge. But Rama-Tut’s knowledge was hardly limited. He found it simple to reinvent himself and dominate this land, under the identity of Kang the Conqueror.

Why should Kang help out more traditional do-gooders? Simple. His grudge against the Avengers isn’t born of malice. He earnestly believes that defeating them will preserve the timeline. As Maria Hill puts it, with Doom “playing jump-rope with the fabric of reality,” there’s no doubt that Kang would take a serious interest in stopping Doom, no matter what it takes.
