Biography
Spider-Man. Thor. Doctor Strange. Mr. Fantastic. Jean Grey. These are just a few of the heroes that Stan Lee created in his six decades with Marvel Comics.
Born to Jewish immigrants living in Manhattan in 1922, Stan (born Stanley Martin Lieber; his name is now legally and officially Stan Lee) grew up influenced by the day’s pop culture, especially Errol Flynn movies. In 1939, he got an assistant position at Timely Comics, which would become Marvel Comics within 30 years. Marshaling his childhood ambition to be a writer, Lee made his comic-book debut with the text filler "Captain America Foils the Traitor's Revenge" in Captain America Comics #3 (May 1941).
From there, Timely morphed into Atlas Comics in the 1950s. Atlas’ stories comprised a wider variety of genres than Timely’s had, and Lee was all too happy to provide Atlas with text. By the late 1950s, Julius Schwartz, then-editor of DC Comics, had revived superheroes as a genre. Atlas publisher Martin Goodman, Lee’s superior, ordered Lee to devise a number of new superheroes. Lee was reluctant. He had grown somewhat tired of working at Atlas and was looking for a career change. His wife advised him to experiment with superheroics, however, since “the worst they can do is fire you!”
But they didn't. Far from it. Lee’s characters were complex and human in ways that hadn’t been seen before in comic books. They were occasionally temperamental, vain, or melancholic; they fought with each other, sometimes over hopelessly petty matters; they paid bills and got bored and sometimes even fell physically ill. Before Lee, the vast majority of superheroes were idealistic specimens of superhuman perfection. They didn’t have problems.
So, why should he be playable? Put simply--why not? Stan’s made numerous cameo appearances in Marvel-licensed video games in the past, including in playable contexts (LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, for example). Thus, it’s not impossible for him to be willing to act in one last playable cameo role.
I recognize that Stan didn’t do it all himself, that Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko were also instrumental in the formation of the greater Marvel Universe. That’s a fair criticism, and I’d like to think I’ve properly addressed it in his Signature (no spoilers! read it yourself :P). I suppose Jack and Steve could even work as Enhanced Costumes for Stan, only Jack’s dead and Steve’s reclusive, so Gaz couldn’t get them to do their own lines, as it were.
