Biography
The fearsome Mad Titan, Thanos, was born on the moon of Saturn by the same name. He is genetically a member of the race of Eternals, although a mutation in his DNA causes him to more closely resemble the Eternals’ cousin race, the Deviants.
As a child, Thanos was curiously pacifistic, although a chance encounter with Mistress Death in his adolescence gave him a warped sense of nihilism and love for the universal entity herself. In fact, he was so in love with death that he murdered his own family in an attempt to get her to notice him. It failed.
Desperate to win Death over, Thanos embarked on a terrible mission. He destroyed his home of Titan, sought out the Cosmic Cube, assembled the Infinity Gems--all for naught. Death still rebuked him.
While ravaging the universe in pursuit of the Infinity Gems, Thanos easily acquired them all save one. That last Gem, the Soul Gem, belonged to Adam Warlock. Thanos was reluctant to strike against Warlock for fear of losing his own soul.
It soon became apparent that Warlock had a temporally removed counterpart known as the Magus, whose galaxy-wide empire would undoubtedly oppose Thanos and his schemes were they to become known. But Thanos, in possession of five of the six Infinity Gems, warped around the timestream and set up numerous events, that the Magus might one day be undone. One such event was adopting Gamora and raising her as Thanos’ personal assassin. Another was allying with Adam Warlock directly. Thanos hoped to create a separate universe where Warlock never became the Magus. Eventually he did succeed, and in this new universe he stole the Soul Gem from under (above?) Warlock’s nose.
Besides Adam Warlock and Gamora, Thanos has threatened, fought, and defeated a panoply of Marvel’s strongest, such as Captain Marvel, most all of the Avengers, Nova, and the Silver Surfer. During Annihilation Wave, he allied himself with Annihilus out of curiosity for the effects such a radical shift in the universal cycle would have.
So with all that in mind, why should Thanos be playable? I am not, honestly, overall interested in discussing why he could or should be--these fan-kits preclude each character being playable in the first place, so this is not really the time or place for yet another discussion. I will say this, though.
Thanos has been shown in the past to make deals with heroes and work alongside them if he earnestly believes that it will benefit him more. This was most notably the case with Adam Warlock and Gamora. In other words, he’ll fight with, not against, the Avengers if he thinks he’s coming out on top. And since whomever is revealed as the final boss of the fourth raid will have to be more threatening to the heroes (and the players by proxy) than Thanos himself, it makes sense to me at least that he would seek...help, let’s call it.
